The Government’s welfare reform plans include a £500 million reduction in spending on financial support for carers — the biggest effective cut to carers' entitlements since Carer's Allowance was first established in 1976.
Changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will mean 150,000 unpaid carers could lose their benefits' entitlements by 2029/30. Because PIP is a key ‘gateway’ benefit that unlocks entitlement to Carer’s Allowance, families losing eligibility for both benefits could lose £8,000 a year from November 2026.
Hundreds of carers have contacted Carers UK in recent weeks extremely concerned these changes will mean they are driven into poverty, unable to pay for bills and essentials, or left with no option but to resort to food banks.
We are deeply concerned about the proposals too and are calling for Government to immediately reconsider them.
